At that time, Kate was working for a magazine about living green and sustainability. She read an article about a tiny house that cost $21,000, and it caught her interest.

Using their creative talents, they designed the house together. It’s a lovely mix of Willem’s love for modern design and Kate’s love for cozy cottages. They spent many months gathering materials and looking for affordable parts on TradeMe to save money.

Kate and her husband built their tiny house for $96,000, the same amount as a down payment for a house in Auckland. It took them three months to build it in West Auckland before moving it to their new place on Waiheke Island. Kate says, “It was the best move we’ve ever made.”

Their home is near Palm Beach, surrounded by birds and trees. Despite being only 27 square meters, it has a lovely kitchen, living room, nursery, laundry area, bathroom with a composting toilet, reading loft, bedroom loft, and French doors that open to a big wrap-around deck.

Kate isn’t naturally a minimalist, but living in a tiny house means there’s no room for a big closet or lots of stuff. “Once you get down to what you really need, it’s pretty easy to live with less,” she says.

At first, she wasn’t sure how living in such a small space would affect their relationship, but she was happy to find that it actually brought them closer.
