In this van tour, we’re visiting Ollie and his cute cat, Marbles! They travel together in a 1985 Toyota Hiace Camper van along the east coast of Australia. Ollie turned the van into a home by himself. He added a kitchen, a bed, a solar-powered electrical system, and even a gaming setup.
Ollie works a job where he works eight days and then has six days off. He loves this schedule because he can put all his effort into his work days and then relax on his days off. With the van, planning is easy. He doesn’t need to book a place to stay; he just decides what he wants to do as he goes.
The van, nicknamed Jennifer Vaniston, is 32 years old and has driven over half a million kilometers. Considering everything, it’s still doing really well.
Ollie has had to replace a few parts like the carburetor and the distributor, but nothing too serious. It’s rare to see a vehicle that’s 32 years old and has traveled this much still driving around.
Sometimes I feel lonely, even though it’s different from just being sad. Having my cat Marbles with me helps a lot. I don’t feel as lonely, and sometimes I joke that I’m just a crazy cat person.
Using Instagram also makes me feel less lonely. It connects me with people who are doing the same things as I am. They might not be in the same parking lot, but they could be just an hour away.
Sometimes, someone responds to my Instagram stories, and we decide to meet up and have a beer. I’ve made some really good friends this way. We find out we have a lot in common, which makes it easier to become friends.
