The Mica cabin is set up to be off the grid and uses solar energy. It has four solar panels, three batteries, and a backup generator. The solar power system runs things like the furnace fan, lights, and USB outlets, as well as the fan for the composting toilet.
For hot water, cooking, and heating, the cabin has two large propane tanks. The cabin also has a special toilet that separates urine. The urine goes into a buried drainage system outside, while solid waste is turned into compost in a special composter.

Once the compost is safe, it can be used on the land. There’s also a system to filter water from the sink and shower.

The cabin gets its water from the lake. This water is stored in a small tank outside the cabin that is always kept full.
