In October 2018, we sold everything we had and started traveling. We live in a bus that we turned into a cabin on wheels. This lets us travel all over the country.
We’re not sure what we’re doing or how long we’ll keep doing this, but we’re trying to enjoy every moment.
We call this our perfectly imperfect tiny house on wheels. We bought an old school bus and made it into a cozy cabin ourselves. Five years ago, we watched a couple on YouTube who traveled all the time and made money while doing it.
We loved that idea and wanted the same life for ourselves. So, we began making choices that we hoped would help make our dream come true one day.
That’s when we found out about “skoolies.” We watched videos of people turning school buses into tiny homes. School buses are strong and make great bases to build on, and they’re pretty cheap. With just a few thousand dollars, you can start building the tiny house of your dreams. So, that’s what we did.
It took us two years to turn the bus into our custom tiny house on wheels. It’s not perfect—it has some rough spots—but it’s ours. It works well, and it lets us travel all the time. In the end, we spent about $23,000. We could have spent less, but we made some expensive mistakes because we were learning as we went.
Even so, our $23,000 custom tiny house costs way less than most new or used RVs or campers. It has everything we need and nothing we don’t.
We also drive a Subaru Outback behind the bus. This setup lets us go wherever we want, whenever we want, and stay as long as we like.
