After serving their country, many veterans face problems when they return home.
These problems can include emotional struggles, trouble finding a job, or even finding a place to live.
To help these veterans, a group of combat veterans created a non-profit organization called the Veterans Community Project (VCP).
According to a video on their YouTube channel, the Veterans Community Project’s mission is to end veteran homelessness by building tiny homes and offering support services.
“The most important thing about these homes is providing dignity. It’s not just about having a roof over their heads.
It’s a true home,” says Bryan Myer, VCP’s CEO and co-founder. These houses give veterans a temporary place to stay until they are ready to move forward with their lives.
The Veterans Community Project gives veterans more than just free housing.
They can visit the Veteran Outreach Center to get help with finding jobs, dealing with military paperwork, and getting emergency support.
Each veteran also has a case manager who helps them with emotional support and plans for finding permanent housing in the future.
The village is in Kansas City, Missouri, at 89th and Troost. It has 49 houses.
Four of these houses are big enough for families of up to seven people, and the rest are for one person each. The houses are small, between 240 and 320 square feet.
About 70% of the houses were built by volunteers and the community helped furnish them. The village has lots of open green space.
A girl scout helped set up a greenhouse where veterans can grow their own vegetables.
The village recently added a fence that makes the homes more private and secure.
The white picket fence also makes the whole village and each house look nicer.
Each house has one step leading to the front door, which is white with a rectangular glass pane at the top.
The front wall of the house is covered in shiplap and painted bluish-gray, creating a peaceful and welcoming feel for the veterans moving in.
When you walk into the house, you’ll notice right away how well everything is arranged.
The bed is in a corner, which makes it cozy and gives you a good view of the living area.
There are big windows along one wall that bring in natural light and fresh air.
The windows face the side of the next house that doesn’t have windows, so everyone’s privacy is protected. There’s also a full-size bathroom in the house.
Every house in the village comes with brand new furniture and appliances.
The kitchen has everything you might need: a full-sized refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, stove, oven, and even a kitchen sink.
When a veteran is ready to move out, they can take everything in the house with them. Then, the house is refurnished for the next veteran who moves in.
These tiny homes offer veterans a safe and peaceful place to live.
The homes protect them from the weather and give them a space to rest their minds and emotions. This helps them get ready to plan their next steps in life.
There’s a quiet area in the village with a labyrinth where veterans can spend time alone. The labyrinth has different stopping points that represent life.
The village also has a large open space with a dog park. It has two separate areas where veterans can relax and have fun with their pets.
