This cabin was finished in 2019 but looks like an old relic. It has the latest technology to save energy. You’ll find this log cabin at the entrance to Peachey Construction near Canyon Ferry Lake in Montana.

At first, you might think it’s a 200-year-old cabin that was moved here for its old charm and sturdy corners. But it’s not. Menno Peachey, the owner of Peachey Construction, built it himself a few years ago.

He used old styles and techniques, but also added modern energy-saving features.

All the wood for the cabin, including the walls, floors, and beams, came from within 20 miles of the site. Peachey got the flagstones for the bathroom floor and front porch from a quarry near Harlowton.

The boulders for the chimney, covered in lichen, came from a ranch outside Great Falls. Kim Loftus, a potter from Helena, made the tiles for the shower and kitchen backsplash.

In Western Montana, where new buildings are popping up, Peachey’s work really stands out. His log cabin shows off his skill in using natural building materials from nearby places.

He builds in a way that reminds us of a time when people made their homes and workplaces with stone and wood found close by, using only hand tools.

Just a few yards from the log cabin, Peachey is finishing up his big 3,000-square-foot shop. This large building has wooden rafters and beams that fit together nicely.

He’s really good at making these tight fits, and even the steps on the stairs are so well joined that he doesn’t need glue.

These days, building a new place usually involves many different teams. One crew pours the foundation, another builds the frame, and a roofing team covers it up.

Then, more teams come in, like electricians, plumbers, and others who add the final touches.

Peachey is famous for doing all the building work himself, from laying the foundation to putting up the last piece of trim. He loves using old building techniques from Europe and the Eastern United States.

His company, Peachey Construction Inc., is known for its high-quality work and fast service.
