Brigitte used to live paycheck to paycheck.
She decided to change her life and move to a peaceful, small home in the countryside.

Many people think retiring means no more work worries. But, there are still many things to consider after retirement.
Worries like getting enough money from retirement plans, staying financially stable, and choosing a place to live are common.
Brigitte had these worries too, especially after she and her husband split up.
One day, she visited a friend and found a book about tiny, cozy homes. Just by looking through the book once, Brigitte knew she wanted to live in a tiny home. She was ready to try something new.
Brigitte had never built a home before, but she was ready to learn and make her dream come true.
As word got out in her community, kind people stepped up to help Brigitte.
A friend gave her an old trailer to use as the base for her new tiny home. Another friend introduced her to a skilled builder who was excited to help with the project.
For almost a year, they worked hard together. They taught Brigitte everything about building a tiny home.
When her home was finally finished, Brigitte was ready to move in. Since she was retired, she designed her tiny house to fit her hobbies and way of life.
Inside, the living area is surprisingly spacious. It has a comfy sofa that also serves as a bed for guests and a keyboard neatly placed under the table.
Up above the kitchen and living room, there’s a cozy sleeping loft that makes the place feel open.
Her home is close to nature and far from the busy city.
Brigitte placed most of her windows to look out over her beautiful garden and the far-off mountains.
Her home is very simple. She doesn’t use running water. Instead, she fills jugs and buckets with water from a nearby spigot, which reminds her of her childhood and feels grounding.
For showers, she uses an outdoor bucket shower when it’s warm. In the winter, she doesn’t mind paying a little to use showers at the local swimming pool.
Getting around is easy for her, thanks to her electric bike with a basket on the back. She uses it to shop for just what she needs in town.
Her garden gives her lots of fresh veggies in the warm months. In the winter, she eats preserved foods.
Brigitte’s whole tiny home project cost about $30,000. She pays $300 a month for her property, which includes internet and electricity.
Brigitte’s story is inspiring for anyone thinking about making their life simpler and transforming how they live.
Someone who saw Brigitte’s story online shared a similar experience of their own.
“Hello my retired friend, I feel how you feel. I was born in 1964 in Maine, and my family had a house with no running water, it wasn’t a problem for us. We survived and yes it made us respect more. We had an outdoor toilet- composting and hauled water as well. I am glad I was raised the way I was, I love helping others and doing for myself. You have a gorgeous home and you seem very happy. That’s what life is about, being happy within yourself and with others. Thanks for sharing.”
Sometimes, you have to be brave and ready to face life’s challenges, just like Brigitte did.
